Movie: The joy luck club

15 mins ago, I just finished watching the movie "The joy luck club". Frankly, I have no clue what does the name got to do with any thing concerning the movie, but I bet it is still worth seeing. It's not superb. It's not fabulous. Strange belief being discussed, mm, Chinese kind of believes, and its.. mmm... strange in a way.

The film is simply about the story of 4 Chinese women, their 4 daughters and their grandmothers, narrated by the women and their daughters.
I enjoyed living thru this. It's honest and beautiful. Simple and tranquil with a human touch.

Well, I do -very- recommend this movie to any one interested in "Details" and "Tangled stories".

I saw this movie , I loved it so much, the basic idea was about mother-daughter relationship and how this relationship affects the lives of the daughters to a great extend .

I have to agree with Rain, I loved this movie begad!I think it encapsulates many feelings women feel whether they being wives, daughter,sisters, mothers and all that..It is really dramatic.Full of emotions.
I was amazed though by the ability of Chinese people to convey emotions and express them.I mean their facial expressions I thought were stable and unchanged.But I literally found myself crying-laughing at the last scene exactly as the actresses were!Overwhelmed is the emotion the movie leaves you with

@Rain,
I believe you've summed up the movie better than me. I loved this intimacy between daughters and their mothers. telling them their strengths and flaws.
It's a good experience I believe... and fills me with a feeling keda.. mm.. mesh 3arfa... bas to value my mother more? mm.. think about the continuity of life?

mesh 3arfa, its just a good movie all in all.

@Gjoe,
It's so full of emotions, i can't disagree. I cried in the last scene when the sisters -finally- got to meet each others. i felt the soul of their mother in between the lines.

I totally agree with your comment as well as rain's.
may be because i've wrote this post immediately after the film, so i didn't give my self a chance to rate it correctly.

I'll search for an online version and re-watch. I think, it means something f3ln. And a must see.

Bas does anyone got any idea, what does the title of the film means :D ? (as i terribly failed to guess)

Maybe the movie wanted to tell us that u won't have peace in ur life as long as u have unresolved issues with ur mother? or they wanted to say that 2e2leb el 2dra 3la fommaha tetla3 el bent le 2ommaha even if she doesn't want to become like her mother?? :D

As for the title.. i have no idea , but i guess it has to do with a place in the movie that i don't recall or maybe it's implying sth that i've missed while watching... i saw it a while ago and i don't remember the details..but if u found out , plz tell me :)

The Joy Luck Club itself is a weekly gathering of Chinese women who play mah jong together. The San Francisco version was derived from the Kweilin version. The starting chapter of the book itself, [ref:Feathers of a Thousand Li] tells the story of how a similar club was found by one of the ladies from the mah jong table, during the Japanese Occupation of China in 1940. This extract explains it best:

So we decided to hold parties and pretend each week had become a new year. Each week we could forget past wrongs done to us. We weren't allowed to think a bad thought. We feasted, we laughed, we played games lost and won, we told the best stories. And each week we could hope to be lucky. That hope was our only joy. And that's how we came to call our little parties Joy Luck.

Having forced to read the book for the cambridge o's exams, I'd say the movie's a thumbs-up entertaining, but the book better. As with all adaptations. =D

I can’t believe u said it’s not a superb movie, and that it's strange. That means you didn’t get it at all, the movie is beautiful, it shows the strain difference in cultures (not just Chinese, but around the world) it deals with immigration, new culture, generations within family, adaption, family values and most important mother-daughter relationships. I have yet to read the book but I cant wait to do so. The movie was nothing short of wonderful, its simplicity added to how anyone and everyone can relate to the issues amy was trying to portray
